D.J. Humphries and Tyvon Branch had productive seasons cut short Thursday night

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Injuries cut short two promising seasons on Thursday night, bringing out Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians' emotional side on Friday.

Left tackle D.J. Humphries and safety Tyvon Branch were having good seasons and both had them cut short by season-ending injuries in Arizona’s 22-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. Humphries suffered a dislocated kneecap and Branch has a torn ACL, according to Arians.

Branch, who was leading the Cardinals in tackles, was having a Pro Bowl-caliber season, Arians said.

“He was having a great year,” Arians said. “I don’t know if he had the reputation to play in the Pro Bowl but he had the game. He was playing at that level.”

Branch had 66 tackles, four pass breakups, three passes defensed and a forced fumble this season. This will be the fourth season in his last five that he’s ended on injured reserve.

“He bailed us out twice last night when guys were beat,” Arians said. “He came over the top and broke up balls.

“It’s just a shame.”

Humphries sprained his right MCL in Week 1 and missed the next four games. But since his return in Week 6, he’s been consistently solid and Arians said he saw a new Humphries.

“Just, he turned into a true pro,” Arians said. “The film study, the extra work out on the practice field. He used to be a jokester, now he’s serious as heck and he’s about his craft and it’s just a shame for these young guys to put so much in after an injury and then get injured again.”
