Meralco eyes 7-footer as second import for FIBA Asia Champions Cup

Bracketed in a strong group led by defending champion Al-Riyadi of Lebanon, Meralco is looking to bring in a tall import as it tries to end a 22-year title drought for the Philippines in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

The Bolts were tapped to represent the Philippines, which placed fifth last year in Chenzhou, China, in the Asian club tournament last week.

"We're just waiting for the agent to get back to me because we're just finalizing the details and flight. But this guy is a legitimate seven-footer who is in the U.S. right now," Meralco team manager Paolo Trillo revealed to ESPN5 on Saturday.

Trillo declined to reveal the name of the player, but said the team's potential second import joined the Philadelphia 76ers and the Oklahoma City Thunder's training camps recently.

"We're just waiting for the signed agreement hopefully sent back to us by Sunday," he added.

The Bolts are set to leave for Nonthaburi, Thailand on September 25.

Meralco will play three straight games from September 27 to 29 in the single-round robin. The tournament takes a break the next day with the semifinals and the finals to be played on October 1 and 2, respectively.

The wards of coach Norman Black are bunched together with Al-Riyadi, Japanese B.League team Alvark Tokyo and host nation Thailand's Mono Vampire in Group B.

Group A includes Iran's Petrochimi, Taiwan's Pauian Archiland, China's Liaoning Flying Leopards and South Korea's SK Knights.

The Philippines last won the FIBA Asia Champions Cup title in 1996 behind club team Hapee Toothpaste, which was then reinforced by Tony Harris and Bobby Parks.
