British Athletics have announced a new event to take place at Stratford's London Stadium that will take place on the same weekend as football's World Cup Final and the finals of Wimbledon.

The two-day event will take place over the weekend of the 14-15th July, and will pit athletics up against the massive football and tennis events.

Teams from Great Britain and the United States will take part, alongside Poland, China, Germany, France, Jamaica and South Africa -- and just one male and one female entrant for each country per discipline will compete in a finals only format with a $2m [£1.43m] prize pot up for grabs.

Speaking about the event, IAAF president Lord Coe said: "This is one of the exciting innovative events we are seeing in our sport and our thanks go to British Athletics and the Mayor of London for creating it and hosting it.

"We have 8 lanes, 8 top nations, 8 teams and a host of world class athletes lining up in each event to win the trophy and prize pot. This will be a fast-paced and exhilarating experience for athletes and fans."

As part of the event, each nation will be captained by a female athlete to celebrate 100 years since women were given the vote in Great Britain.
