AFL Draft Wrap: Oakleigh's Jack Ross stakes a late claim for draft day

Each week, ESPN.com.au AFL draft expert Chris Doerre casts his eye over the country's best junior footballers to give readers an early insight into the next generation of AFL stars.

As well as attending live games, Doerre pores through match vision, analyses the stats and talks to industry sources to ensure he can offer the most insightful draft analysis.

Aside from the weekly wraps, Doerre will also unveil his power rankings at the end of each month and as we get closer to November's national draft, Doerre will also predict who goes where with his annual phantom draft.

Player Focus

Extending the Associated Public Schools' (APS) win streak to eight straight against Associated Grammar Schools Victoria (AGSV) in the annual Victorian private school competition clash, Jack Ross was arguably the most influential on the field. The 186cm, 85kg, midfielder who in each of his past four matches for Oakleigh has featured among their best players, showcased attributes to suggest his draft stocks may rise in the lead-up to this year's AFL draft.

Performing a central role in APS' 11-point victory against AGSV, Ross won first possession at stoppages and demonstrated the power to burst through tackles. His loose ball-winning, ball use and decision-making were also impressive.

Following an invite to the state combine last week, Ross posted 27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six marks, four clearances, eight inside 50s, one goal and two score assists.

As a potential ball-winning midfielder, Ross' game bares similarities to West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed as a powerful midfielder who uses the ball effectively. Ross is not a certain draft choice, having missed selection for the Under-18 Championships, but if he can help Oakleigh win a few finals, he may receive consideration late in the draft or as a rookie.

APS vs. AGSV

APS

Winning the ball through the midfield, providing outside run and using the ball effectively, Heath Briggs was the APS' most productive. The 182cm, 80kg in-and-under midfielder accumulated 30 disposals, seven marks, four clearances, seven inside 50s and three score assists.

Collingwood Next Generation Academy prospect Bailey Wraith was arguably the most influential for APS during the first half. The 191cm, 84kg, forward provided a valuable marking target inside 50m. Wraith secured 13 disposals, seven marks (two contested) and three goals.

The other dominant tall forward was underager Charlie Dean. The 194cm, 86kg, key forward was dangerous around goal with 12 disposals, three goals and three behinds.

AGSV

Intercepting and providing run from defence, 187cm, 72kg, defender Justin McInerney accumulated 29 disposals, 11 marks, nine contested possessions, six inside 50s and two score assists.

Underage midfielder Trent Bianco was arguably AGSV's most impressive. Bianco's kicking, vision and evasive movement opened the game and instigated much of AGSV's offence. The 178cm, 70kg, midfielder amassed 27 disposals, 15 marks and five inside 50s. Of his 18 kicks, 14 were effective.

Providing meaningful drive from defence, the play of 185cm, 76kg, defender Sam Graham was a highlight. His run, evasion, precise kicking and composure generated meaningful offense. The exciting defender secured 27 disposals and six tackles. Of his 21 kicks, 15 were effective.

Hurting APS with his play up forward, Samuel Sturt demonstrated a mix between aerial marking and ground level proficiency. The promising forward produced 15 disposals, eight marks (one contested), six inside 50s, two goals and two score assists.

Proving dangerous at ground level up forward, 181cm, 78kg, forward Kye Yodgee was clean with his ground level pickups and demonstrated composure, vision and reliable skills. The exciting forward posted 13 disposals and three goals. Of his seven kicks, six were effective.

Bigoa will need to become more of a factor around the ground with only three disposals with his game-high 20 hitouts.

At stoppages, Green was the prolific ball winner, often winning first possession. He showed a few tricks, manoeuvring through traffic, bursting through opposition tacklers at speed, hitting forward 50m targets and the scoreboard, showing he is more than a one-dimensional ball winner.

Taking numerous intercept marks in defence, 192cm, 90kg, Liam Delahunty was one of his side's best performers. The GWS Academy product secured 23 disposals, seven marks and seven rebound 50s.

Since the conclusion of the Under-18 Championships, Briggs has, on the back of his performances in the NEAFL, created separation between himself and this year's other ruck prospects, firming as a possible second round choice.

TSL

Earning best on ground honours in Launceston's win against the Tigers, Chayce Jones was prolific through the midfield with 12 clearances. Jones has featured in Launceston's best players in each of his four appearances and is firming as a likely first round choice.
