Key Kangaroo in doubt for Giants AFL clash

AFL

Veteran North Melbourne forward Jarrad Waite will be given until the last minute to prove he is fit to take on GWS in Hobart.

The 35-year-old suffered a corked hip late in the Roos' 10-point loss to Richmond on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

Waite kicked two goals in his comeback game after being rested from the side who beat Sydney by two points, but finished the match on the bench.

"I suspect we'll name him in our side and give him until Saturday morning to prove his fitness," coach Brad Scott told reporters on Wednesday.

"It was an outstanding attempt at a spoil from Alex Rance (that hurt Waite).

"Unfortunately for Waitey, he got him in a good spot, but he said at the time that it's just a cork and he'd be right.

"It was late in the game and he just couldn't function so we took him off. Just watching him this morning, he's walking and jogging without a limp so I think he'll be right."

Sunday's clash was the first time this season Waite had played alongside Coleman Medal leader Ben Brown and Mason Wood in a three-tall attack.

The trio finished with two goals apiece in an encouraging display.

"We'll keep tinkering with it and it will change depending on the opposition but, as to whether I think they can all play together, that's a resounding yes," Scott said.

The Kangaroos face a depleted Giants side at Blundstone Arena, where they have an imposing 12-4 record since hosting home games there in 2012.

Leon Cameron's side will be without injured stars Phil Davis, Toby Greene, Brett Deledio and Josh Kelly to name a few.

"They've just been hammered with injury, but that can provide opportunity for a lot of players too," Scott said.

"They've had some debutants come in and play, but they're still an immensely talented side. They've got an extremely deep midfield.

"They're a very good team, but probably haven't lived up to their own lofty expectations at the moment."

North skipper Jack Ziebell is free to lead the side after being cleared of a kneeing charge on Tuesday night at the AFL tribunal.
