How your club went in the AFL trade period

AFL

A CLUB-BY-CLUB GUIDE TO ALL OF THE 2017 AFL TRADES:

Adelaide:

In: Bryce Gibbs (Carlton), Sam Gibson (North Melbourne)

Out: Jake Lever (Melbourne), Charlie Cameron (Brisbane), Harrison Wigg (Gold Coast)

Draft order: 12, 39, 77, 109

They say: "We're bringing in two people of high character who have got durability. They will help us get better." - List manager Justin Reid.

We say: Could Gibbs be the man to lift Adelaide from grand final despair to glory? The Crows would want to hope so after giving up two first-round picks for him. Lever and Cameron are big losses but the Crows held on long enough to be tidily compensated.

Brisbane:

In: Charlie Cameron (Adelaide), Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)

Out: Tom Rockliff (Port Adelaide), Josh Schache (Western Bulldogs)

Draft order: 1, 15, 18, 40, 44, 52, 93

They say: "We've protected our top end talent again, got Charlie (Cameron) in which is great for him and for us. We're really happy with the dealing overall." - Football boss David Noble.

We say: The Lions did well to snare homesick livewire Cameron and barely gave up anything for Hawks champion Hodge. Fair to say Chris Fagan's appointment as coach is already paying dividends.

Carlton:

In: Matt Kennedy (Greater Western Sydney), Darcy Lang (Geelong), Matthew Lobbe (Port Adelaide)

Out: Bryce Gibbs (Adelaide)

Draft order: 3, 10, 30, 73

They say: "We have brought exciting talent in which strengthens our midfield, while also furthering our position heading into the 2017 national draft which is important as a young side continuing to build its depth." - List manager Stephen Silvagni.

We say: The Gibbs trade will undoubtedly hurt in the short-term. But you've got to hand it to list guru Stephen Silvagni - two early first-round draft picks and three ready-made recruits is a very good bounty for a rebuilding side.

Collingwood:

In: Sam Murray (Sydney)

Out: N/A

Draft order: 6, 38, 56, 61, 80, 98

They say: "(Sam) Murray's leg speed and ability to break the lines from defence will make him a key asset in the club's future plans." - List manager Derek Hine.

We say: You know it's been a flat trade period when the highlight is recruiting a rookie who is yet to play a senior game. Very little activity from a side that can't afford to be too static if they want to make it back into the finals.

Essendon:

In: Jake Stringer (Western Bulldogs), Devon Smith (Greater Western Sydney), Adam Saad (Gold Coast)

Out: N/A

Draft Order: 48, 67, 85, 103

They say: "We're extremely happy and really excited with Jake (Stringer) .. it caps off a marvellous trade period for the club to get three high-quality players." - List manager Adrian Dodoro.

We say: A very productive fortnight for a side once considered a nightmare to deal with at the trade table. Stringer is somewhat of a risky pick but has enormous potential, and the Bombers got him for a good price.

Fremantle:

In: Nathan Wilson (Greater Western Sydney), Brandon Matera (Gold Coast)

Out: Lachie Weller (Gold Coast), Harley Balic (Melbourne), Hayden Crozier (Western Bulldogs)

Draft Order: 2, 5, 42, 60, 66, 71, 79, 83, 97

They say: "We look forward to going to next year's draft with picks two and five ... it's an unbelievable opportunity to pick from the top end of the draft." - List manager Simon Lloyd.

We say: The Dockers surely didn't expect Gold Coast to part with pick for No.2 for 21-year-old Weller but that's exactly what happened. Throw in key targets Wilson and Matera and the Dockers are the clear winners of the trade period.

Geelong:

In: Gary Ablett (Gold Coast)

Out: Steven Motlop (Port Adelaide), Darcy Lang (Carlton)

Draft Order: 22, 24, 35, 58, 72, 90, 108

They say: "We've given up a bit to (get Gary) but it's a great story ... Gary's very confident he's got a lot of good footy left in him." - List manager Stephen Wells

We say: It doesn't get much better than the Ablett name returning to Kardinia Park. Turned out to be a solid deal for the Cats, who used the compensation pick they received for free agent Steven Motlop's departure.

Gold Coast:

In: Lachie Weller (Fremantle), Aaron Young (Port Adelaide), Harrison Wigg (Adelaide)

Out: Gary Ablett (Geelong), Brandon Matera (Fremantle), Adam Saad (Essendon)

Draft Order: 19, 41, 50, 54, 76, 94

They say: "We certainly would have preferred to keep pick two but when you spread it over three years, we've had four top 10 picks last year ... (and) we've banked two for next year." - List manager Scott Clayton.

We say: Oh dear. The Suns explained that they were happy to pay overs for Weller because they didn't rate this year's draft too highly. But by any definition, it was a huge price to pay for a largely unproven player who only had a year left on his contract.

Greater Western Sydney:

In: N/A

Out: Nathan Wilson (Fremantle), Devon Smith (Essendon), Matt Kennedy (Carlton)

Draft Order: 11, 27, 28, 57, 65, 89, 107

They say: "We were very keen to move into the first round to be able to secure some of the best young talent in the country, and we've managed to do that." - List manager Craig Cameron.

We say: A pretty quiet fortnight for the Giants, who seem to have found a happy balance of talented rookies and mature bodies. Wilson and Smith are both tough losses but nothing they can't cover.

Hawthorn:

In: Jarman Impey (Port Adelaide)

Out: Luke Hodge (Brisbane)

Draft Order: 43, 68, 75, 81, 99

They say: "While we were hoping for a slightly higher draft pick, we are pleased a deal was able to be reached which allows Luke (Hodge) to take up this new opportunity with the Lions." - List manager Graham Wright.

We say: Not much doing for the Hawks after a very busy trade period last year. Impey will be a handy addition and the Hawks will be comfortable enough letting former skipper Hodge head to the Lions.

Melbourne:

In: Jake Lever (Adelaide), Harley Balic (Fremantle)

Out: Jack Watts (Port Adelaide)

Draft Order: 29, 31, 36, 47, 84, 102

They say: "Jake will have an immediate impact on our group - on field as an important member of our defence, but also off the field with his professionalism and competitiveness." - Football boss Josh Mahoney.

We say: Lever is a big addition for the Dees and should bolster their chances of making the finals next year. Showed they're willing to be ruthless by dealing favourite son Watts to the Power.

North Melbourne:

In: N/A

Out: Sam Gibson (Adelaide)

Draft Order: 4, 23, 64, 78, 91, 96

They say: "North Melbourne will be well placed to bid on its 2018 father-son and academy prospects after a late trade with Port Adelaide on Thursday."

We say: Talk of bringing in a superstar proved to be all bluster after Dustin Martin and Josh Kelly knocked back huge offers. A disappointing fortnight for a rebuilding side with plenty of money in the bank.

Port Adelaide:

In: Jack Watts (Melbourne), Tom Rockliff (Brisbane), Steven Motlop (Geelong)

Out: Aaron Young (Gold Coast), Brendon Ah Chee (West Coast), Jackson Trengove (Western Bulldogs), Jarman Impey (Hawthorn), Logan Austin (St Kilda), Matthew Lobbe (Carlton)

Draft Order: 46, 49, 59, 62, 63, 86, 95

They say: "Those were the three players we targeted. We're really pleased they chose us as our preferred club." - List manager Jason Cripps.

We say: Last year the Power didn't make a single deal. This year they made their move in a big way. Can legitimately claim to be a destination club after luring Watts, Rockliff and Motlop while clearing several mid-tier players off their list.

Richmond:

In: N/A

Out: N/A

Draft Order: 17, 20, 25, 53, 55, 74, 92, 110

They say: N/A

We say: The premiership celebrations have barely stopped at Punt Road, so it's little surprise that the trade period appeared to escape the Tigers' notice. Swapped some picks to help bring in father-son prospect Patrick Naish.

St Kilda:

In: Logan Austin (Port Adelaide)

Out: N/A

Draft Order: 7, 8, 34, 45, 100

They say: "We're really bullish about the top end talent in this year's draft, and to have two picks inside the top 10 for the first time in 16 years is really exciting for our fans." - List manager Tony Elshaugu.

We say: Like the Kangaroos, the Saints had grand plans for the trade period but came out virtually empty-handed. Not a great outcome for a side that had two early draft picks at their disposal.

Sydney:

In: N/A

Out: Sam Murray (Collingwood)

Draft Order: 14, 33, 51, 70, 88, 106

They say: "We knew going into this trade period that we were going to be pretty quiet, so we are comfortable with how everything panned out." - Football boss Tom Harley.

We say: An uneventful fortnight for the Swans, who had signalled plans to focus on the draft. Unclear whether maligned big man Kurt Tippett was on the table but if he was, there were no bites.

West Coast:

In: Brendon Ah Chee (Port Adelaide)

Out: N/A

Draft Order: 13, 21, 26, 32, 37, 69, 87, 105

They say: "To achieve what we needed, we felt like we had to go into the future and we get five picks, hopefully bringing in some really good talent." - List manager Brady Rawlings.

We say: Ah Chee is a handy pickup on the cheap. The Eagles also took a big gamble, dealing their first-round selection in the 2018 'super-draft' in exchange for a stack of second-round picks.

Western Bulldogs:

In: Josh Schache (Brisbane), Hayden Crozier (Fremantle), Jackson Trengove (Port Adelaide)

Out: Jake Stringer (Essendon)

Draft Order: 9, 16, 82, 101

They say: "We wish Jake well but to have Hayden and Jackson and Josh at our club and get access to a first-round pick this year, an additional one, we're really pleased." - Football boss Chris Grant.

We say: Mixed fortunes for the Dogs. They didn't get the first-round pick they were after for estranged forward Stringer but they did land a handy replacement in Josh Schache. Free agent Jackson Trengove will bolster their ruck stocks.
