Port coach praises AFL punch crackdown

Aussie Rules Football

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley says common sense has prevailed with the AFL's crackdown on punching.

The AFL has signalled jumper punches and punches to the body will no longer be tolerated after a spate of incidents in recent weeks went largely unpunished.

"Common sense has been applied," Hinkley told reporters on Wednesday.

"You punch someone, you get in trouble."

Hinkley said he "absolutely" supported the crackdown.

"I don't think there is any need that you punch players ... (it has) certainly made our players aware that it now has to stop - and it should stop.

"The AFL have got it 100 per cent right. There's just no need to punch players."
