ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. They will change often, based on recent results and performances. Rankings are based on what a fighter has accomplished in the weight division in which he is ranked. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to re-enter the rankings after his next bout.
Jack Catterall had to wait more than two years to get his rematch with Josh Taylor, but it was worth the wait. Catterall defeated Taylor by unanimous decision Saturday night at First Direct Arena in Leeds, England.
Back in February 2022, Catterall (29-1, 13 KOs), of Lancashire, England, suffered the first defeat of his career , challenging Taylor for the undisputed junior welterweight championship, by a controversial split decision with scorecards of 113-112, 111-114 and 112-113. Catterall dropped Taylor in Round 8 of that fight, but it wasn't enough in the eyes of the judges. A rematch had been planned since, but due to injuries suffered by Taylor and a scheduling conflict, it was postponed three times.
When they finally met on Saturday, Catterall, 30, and Taylor, 33, delivered non-stop action, and this time, Catterall was rewarded with scorecards of 117-111, 117-111 and 116-113.
"It's bittersweet tonight. No world titles. I won the fight. We can close that chapter with Josh Taylor," Catterall said after the bout.
Taylor (19-2, 13 KOs), of Edinburgh, Scotland, has lost two consecutive bouts, including a unanimous decision to Teofimo Lopez last June when he lost the WBO belt.
"I thought it was a great fight. Fair play to Jack. He was a better fighter than the first fight," Taylor said.
With the victory, Catterall moves up one spot to No. 4 in the division, while Taylor drops one place to No. 8.
Rankings are determined by Mike Coppinger, Nick Parkinson, Damian Delgado Averhoff and Andres Ferrari. They are updated weekly on Tuesdays.
